Biography of Da Hong Pao

Da Hong Pao originated in late Ming Dynasty and became famous in early Qing Dynasty. It was the tribute during successive dynasties. And it is honored as the King of Wuyi Rock Tea. Legend says that in early Ming Dynasty, a candidate for the imperial examinations fainted in the street due to heatstroke when he went via Mount Wuyi to take the exam. Monks of Tianxin Temple saved him, and cured him using tea as medicine. After recovering from the pain, the candidate came first in the highest imperial examination as the Number One Scholar; he went back to Tianxin Temple to repay their kindness. The abbot said who saved his life was not the monk but the tea. Therefore, he showed his gratitude and brought the tea back to the capital. At that time, citizens in the capital were living in terror and anxiety since the Queen had abdominal distension and felt continually painful. Imperial physicians were totally helpless. So the Number One Scholar ventured to advice the Emperor that Wuyi Tea had the magical power. The Queen stopped the pain immediately after drinking the tea and retention of food disappeared within a day. The emperor was so much pleased and ordered him to reward the tea three. When he arrived at Jiulongke, he put the red robe on the tea tree and worshipped at it, hence the name came after that.
